Background of the study
Community-based forest conservation has become a vital approach to preserving biodiversity and ensuring sustainable resource management, particularly in regions like Boki Local Government Area. The forests in Boki play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting local livelihoods, yet they face threats from deforestation, illegal logging, and unsustainable land use practices (Etim, 2023). Local communities have increasingly taken initiatives to conserve these resources through traditional practices and modern conservation techniques. Recent research emphasizes that empowering communities can lead to enhanced forest stewardship and better resource management outcomes (Ibe, 2024). The integration of indigenous knowledge with formal conservation strategies has shown promise in addressing deforestation and biodiversity loss. However, challenges persist, including limited funding, inadequate policy support, and external pressures from commercial interests (Obasi, 2025). This study examines how community-based efforts are organized, the extent of their success, and the challenges they face. By analyzing current practices and exploring new strategies, the research aims to contribute to the sustainable management of forest resources and to reinforce community resilience in the face of environmental threats (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Boki Local Government Area has experienced significant forest degradation despite ongoing community-based conservation initiatives. Challenges such as limited financial resources, poor policy implementation, and external commercial pressures have undermined conservation efforts. The persistence of illegal logging and unsustainable practices continues to threaten forest biodiversity and local livelihoods. There is an urgent need to assess and enhance these community-driven approaches to ensure effective forest management (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  • To assess the effectiveness of community-based forest conservation initiatives in Boki.
  • To identify key challenges facing these initiatives.
  • To recommend policy and community actions for sustainable forest management.

Research questions

  • How effective are the community-based conservation efforts in preserving forest resources in Boki?
  • What are the major challenges impeding these initiatives?
  • What policy recommendations can support improved forest conservation practices?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Community-based initiatives significantly enhance forest conservation outcomes.
  • H2: Insufficient funding and policy support adversely affect conservation efforts.
  • H3: Strengthening community participation will lead to improved forest management.

Significance of the study
The study offers valuable insights into the effectiveness of community-based conservation efforts, informing policy adjustments and enhanced funding strategies. It provides a framework for sustainable forest management and empowers local communities to better protect their natural resources.

Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the examination of community-based forest conservation efforts in Boki Local Government Area, Cross River State.

Definitions of terms

  • Forest conservation: The protection, preservation, and management of forest resources.
  • Community-based initiatives: Programs and actions led by local populations to address environmental issues.
  • Biodiversity: The variety of plant and animal life in a particular habitat.
